Q: How do you know what you know?
A: I know what I know because of my studies or from personal experiences.
Q: Name one new thing you learned using a social media site today and explain why you believe it is true.
A: Today, using a social media site I learned about the respiratory virus that is spreading among children. The virus, EV-D68, causes coughing and wheezing in its hosts and has caused some children to be admitted to the ICU; the virus has spread to approximately ten states so far.
Q: What source did you use to acquire this information?
A: I first saw a posting about this virus on Face Book and I looked it up for further information;  I used USA Today to acquire more information about it.
Q:  At times, are social media sites reliable for obtaining credible information?
A: Yes, this is a straightforward story and is not requiring a lot of sources to verify the information. The main source which information is needed from is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Social media is helping with spreading awareness about this virus.

  1. Whitney,
I realize that you said you don't feel that this article required a lot of sources, but do you have more confidence in health sites rather than simply seeing an article on Facebook? I know that I have seen several supposed viruses and diseases on Facebook along with pictures. I never seem to hear much about them later, so I assume that since a news station didn't cover these diseases and viruses, neither must be something to worry about. Do you tend to agree?

    1. Morgan, I did mention that I initially found out about the virus from Face Book but I looked for information about the article from alternative sources-I would not use a Face Book article link as a source. Being that USA Today is newspaper read across the nation and has years of credibility behind their articles, I feel this media outlet was sufficient basis for this blog posting. Also, with their main source being the Centers for Disease and Control, I did not find need to reiterate information by posting links to various health sites. However, I would agree with you if this was a research paper and I did require more sources to back up my findings.
